Energy-focused UK charity Nesta, which runs the Visit a Heat Pump scheme featured in Bloomberg recently, has launched a new project offering a free heat pump to installers who have just completed their training.
Work has started on a mine water district heating scheme in County Durham, in England. It will recover heat from the water and use a heat pump to step up that heat to warm around 750 homes in the Seaham Garden Village development.
I stumbled on a fun video this week, in which Japanese YouTuber Nao explains why homes in his country generally don’t have central heating.
Hat tip to Jan Rosenow who shared this chart from the UK’s Heat Pump Association on Bluesky this week. It reveals that UK sales of heat pumps grew by more than 63% in 2024, compared to 2023. This trend is also reflected in new official figures on a subset of heat pump installations, those supported by government subsidies. However, the heat pump rollout is still only about a sixth of the UK government’s 2028 target of 600,000 units per year.
